Thursday: Wild Sextet

Walk the dog at 9pm and head into Murphy's for a free concert with one of the Best Jazz acts in the USA right now. Original tunes inspired by the greats from the Fifties and Sixties. Bedazzling
dueling Saxophones from two of the towering talents in Boston, Andy Voelker and Timo Shanko, ridiculous guitar from Steve Fell and sublime rhythm section from Geoff Charland and Luther. Then there is the founder Grayson Farmer on Trumpet, nearing legend status from appearing on Slip albums and original member of The Jazz Farmers with The Duo's Marco Benevento.

FRIDAY: 3 Day Threshold

Classic bluegrass rifts with punk rock's hard edge..The Boston Herald said: "Boston's Three Day Threshold has a felicitously original sound. Combining the best of The Rolling Stones, The Pogues, Little Feat and Johnny Cash, Three Day Threshold gets juiced up. 3DTs songs are energetic, loud and crafted with terrific hooks."

SATURDAY: Sambalolo

Boubacar Diabate warms up for the New Years Eve show with a Saturday night vibe. Excellent African tunes with some American influences creeping in there courtesy of Dave's Daniel Lanois
esque guitar treatment.

SUNDAY: Instrumentals

John Frazee is a mainstay on the Boston circuit and tonight sees him step up with an authentic retro- classic ska band The Instrumentals. A great band to lead us into the Holiday spirit
for sure.

MONDAY: PUB RECORDS XMAS PARTY.

SATURDAY: Gypsy Schaeffer

Andy Voelker leads this up and at them Jazz act with distinction. Tight rhythms and superb arrangements feature on this gig. Andy is the Sax player in the Thursday night Jazz band at Murphy's, a top bloke and if you ask him if he wants a beer, he might say yes.

SUNDAY: Void Union

Void Union is the band to watch this year! A collective of Thad Merritt (Bass), Jesse Hayes (Drums), Rich Graiko (Trumpet), John DeCarlo (Guitar), and Josh Cohen (Tenor Sax). Vibe music to keep people on the dance floor all night long with timeless Jamaican grooves. Keep and eye out for the next Gwen Stefani on guest lead vocals...sensational.

Jimmy Trapella leads his band into the breach! The Friday Social will never be the same again. Complimented by a tight rhythm section and Rex on Keys this is a band choc full of tunes and
energy. Reggae sound with some dark dub funk elements.

SATURDAY: REX COMPLEX

As part of The Well Rex has shown his ability to shine on many occasion. Tonight we get to see him step out as the main man Melding World rhythms and funk grooves this is a a welcome addition to the Friday Social roster.

SUNDAY: RUBBLEBUCKET ORCHESTRA

Members from John Brown's Body perform an Afro-Dub Trance vibe. I guess you cross Anti Balas with Scratch Perry or something. Lots of Trumpet and melody too I imagine if Alex Toth is in the mix, which he is!

MONDAY: LOIS CATO AND TIMO SHANKO

This is the face off moment between Wally's and Murphy's. In one corner we have the man of the moment Lois Cato, drummer and bass player extraordinaire and in the other corner we have Timo Shanko. Murphy's very own virtuoso. Sensational. This will blow your mind.

TUESDAY: B3 KINGS

Here for the next round of Tuesdays is the ever popular B3 kings on a mission to convert everyone to the Church of B3. Boogaloo meets Reggae with some serious attitude. We are talking Brian Thomas (Akashic, JBB) and Timo Shanko on all out attack mode. Sensational musicianship with an up for it crowd.

The front man for the seminal post jam indie - rock band The Slip stops by Murphy's for a solo show as part of his tour. Expect a packed house for what will be a seminal performance.
A veteran of tours with My Morning Jacket and performances on Conan O'Brien this year......

SATURDAY: Los Acoustilocos

Brazilian and South American tunes abound with this seven piece band that brings the party to the fore. Excellent musicianship and a host of great performances with this easy on the eyes
tour de force. Bring your dancing shoes and get up close to a relative stranger!

SUNDAY: 3 Leg Dog

Made up from members of John Brown's Body and Bqez this band has the makings of being one of the most talked about dub bands in town. Come down for the usual heady cocktail of sinful beats and low elements. The essential end to the week.

MONDAY: SHEA ROSE

What can be said about Miss Shea? An onstage grace that few can even imagine coupled with a voice as distinct as you will get to hear. After making a spell bounding appearance with Johnny
Trama at Harper's Ferry for his record release she has been badgered by me to play a solo show. Here it is! Come down and celebrate the presence of a star in the making.

Greg has guested on many a Public House night and B3 Kings. This is his debut with his own band in the room and we are looking forward to it we can tell you! Funked up soul music to the nth degree and a vibe factor of eleven. Or as Ringo would say "a thousand percent".

SATURDAY: Gypsy Schaeffer

Andy Voelker leads one of the most talked about alt-jazz bands in town.
A mainstay of the Thursday night resident band, Wild Sextet, tonight sees Andy stretch out and take full control! All original tunes with tips of the hat to Coltrane and Coleman.

SUNDAY: VIBEWISE

Tonights Live and Direct features a band that is familiar with Murphy's audiences by now. The ever energetic and supercharged Ajah-ni never fails to intoxicate his audience . With one of the most distinctive voices in Reggae his performance will leave you spellbound.The band provides a great hard hitting reggae-dub soundtrack for the weekend.

MONDAY: Maeve Gilchrist

Maeve brings her cross genre multi ethnic nu jazz folk to Murphy's for another spin on the dance floor. The word captivating does not do this act justice. We have virtuoso South American rhythms coupled with glorious sounds of Scottish Harp. Top that off with a great singer with a rare beauty and you have a magical night.

Sunny Delight

The Superpowers release the third great album of the summer (after C-Money and Toussaint) and are the next big thing for Pub Records. Not only were they named as the Best World Act in the Phoenix music poll but WERS (88.9fm) have picked them out as artist of the month for September and are welcoming them to the Regattabar on Friday 7th September for what will be the official release party. Three Day Threshold, recently signed to High and Dry records,

Culture on the Skids,Lester Flatt, Duke Levine.Bluegrass/Celtic/Punk.

SUNDAY: Knockout

The band that provided one of the most pop moments on the
'live @ eleven' soundtrack return after a long hiatus. Dub in
sound but more melodic than the standard dub act by far. Add
the B3 with Paul W behind the wheel and you have melodies flowing
with grooves on top of bass lines aplenty. Shanko and Tommy
Benedetti fill out the sound tonight. Get down to Live and Direct
for a tour de force music wise.

MONDAY: Scarecrow Mobius

Saxophonist James Merenda of the Masked Marvels and bassist
Mike Rivard of Club d'Elf join forces this evening. Along with
keyboardist Dave Bryant and percussionist James Kamal Jones,
both veterans of Ornette Coleman's Prime Time, an evening of
music adventurous and esoteric, earthy and engaging is guaranteed.

Flying with Club D'elf

When the Beatles split in 1970 they left behind a legacy that is unrivalled in modern popular music and also left a legion of fans past, present and future waiting for something more.
The Bee Gee's efforts to reclaim Sgt Pepper did not quite cut it, nor did U2's horrendous wailing "claim" of Helter Skelter, McCartney himself did a disservice at Live Aid in 1985 with the help of a dodgy mic on 'Let it Be'.
No, there have not been many great moments since they closed the book on their somewhat illustrious career. (Ok I did get all giddy and excited for four minutes in 1995 with the launch of the Anthology series, but I was still fresh from the Liverpool concert put on by Yoko....)


Last night in a small pub in Brookline, MA was a night to tip the scales in the direction of good Beatles moments in a land of Beatles brunches, Beatle hour and Beatles Monday with the inevitable regurgitation of the same tried and tested tunes of popular consumption.


'Flying' was given the Club D'elf-esque treatment. That is to say an original approach in an enigmatic, inspired and unusual way.


Treat yourself to six minutes off the treadmill of bullshit and listen to this live unrehearsed remarkable version of the only Beatles tune written by all four loveable mop tops.


This is not only fab and gear it is the toppermost of the poppermost.

Brad Barr meets the B3 Kings.

Fresh from having released Eisenhower, The Slip have run rough shod throughout Northern America with a live show that has improved immensely since first going on the road with My Morning Jacket.

Brad Barr turned up and sat in with the B3 Kings and turned in quite a performance at Matt Murphy's here. Typical of Brad to start out humble amongst his friends in the B3 Kings - the solo bursts to life once the shackles are off and there are no notes left unturned by the end. Excellent stuff and proof positive in all things LIVE!

Greg Luttrell/B3 Kings in Sly and Family Stone tribute.

Sly and the Family Stone got the full on treatment when B3 Kings and Greg Luttrell tackled the classic 'In Time' from the 1973 album Fresh.

A busy night on stage saw a rotating line up including Brad Barr and Bouba step up to the spotlight. Each one taking the vibe into a different direction.

B3 Kings are back in two weeks time at Matt Murphy's on June 12th.
