Boston Afrobeat Close out Murphy's Residency with a bang

Boston Afrobeat Society reached for their handkerchiefs for this last night of their year long residency.
There has to be something said for going out on a high note and this is one. Take ten aspiring musicians at the begining of their careers and add a hint of bravado, a ton of talent and at least a modicum of good looks (!)and what do you get? Success on all fronts.
Without doubt one of the major forces to have graced the Murphy's stage and definitely one of the most ambitious projects. What we have here is a Fela Kuti inspired ten piece band playing mostly original afrobeat music on a Sunday night! To say the last year has been nothing short of sensational would be an understatement. The Boston Music awards recognised what it had in place with a Best World Music Act award and the audience was never far behind in their acclaim. Here at the Weekly Vibe we are privilidged to give to you....
Boston Afrobeat Society's final set....The Last Waltz.
You can hear the Boston Afrobeat Society on St Patricks Day @ Matt Murphy's Pub.

The Tide Is High - Zion Blood

Here at Pub Records central we make no apologies for what is and isn't played at Matt Murphy's on any given night....be it Free Jazz on a Friday (which works goddamit!) or the devils music on a Sunday. It's all music afterall.
We care not a jot for what might or might not be deemed cool or otherwise by some poe-faced skinny indie kid nickle and diming in Brooklyn.
Which brings me to the following track of inadvertent mashed up 80's take on reggae by way of the 21st Century. The keyboard player cannot even play the main melody....but that makes it even better as your mind compensates for it and readjusts to make amends.
Sit back and listen to a whole new genre of music.
We call it reggae lounge kitcsh-core.

Berklee/Murphys Singer Songwriter Series Part 3 (Elliot Smith)

Berklee/Murphys Singer Songwriter Series Part 3 (Elliot Smith).
Brought together three strong artists to the haven of up and coming talent, Matt Murphy's !
Lights down, action. First up was Sydney Wayser who fired straight into a glorious set before a PACKED out crowd. Whatever happened to the weekend? Then Emily Greene performed with an intensity and a set of youthful abandon and ease.
Finally Zach Hillyard hit the stage at Midnight to a still strong crowd and played a punchy set of Wonder-esque J-Kay vibes. Loved the guitarist face, a rival for Geoff Scott if ever there was one...how dare he! Great sounds and tight band, only been together two months.
Check out his track below.
The Berklee Singer Songwriter Tribute Series - final week is next Monday at Matt Murphys Pub, Brookline.

B3 Kings defy the storm!!!

B3 Kings defy the storm!!!
Such is the pull of the B3 Kings that Murphy's was still hopping despite the
threat of the media inspired scare stories of freak weather.....
Believe us when we say we've seen 3 inches before.
Back to the music. Grayson Farmer (Wild Sextet) took the place of Sam Kinninger and
added a beautiful top register sound.
Check his solo out towards the end of this track and you will wish you were here.

Wild Sextet with 2/3rds The Slip

The Wild Sextet host the hootenany/party to lift the spirits and mend the soul at Matt Murphy's every Thursday. Sit back relax and float upstream.

Deep into the second set, up step Andrew and Brad Barr to lend whatever it is gets you on Conan O'Brien these days ;).....and well done by the way!

Bold and beautiful yet not the easiest song in the world to sit in on for sure. At the heart of it all is Andy Voelker and Timo Shanko bristling with an unbridled energy that will spin you up and around if you are not careful.

Safe in the knowledge that you need to hear this, Pub Records gives you Wild Sextet vs The Slip round one, sort of.

Madi Diaz

Madi Diaz performed with the confidence of a seasoned singer who has seen it and bought the t-shirt.
With an unpretentious approach that will win her a lot of fans she even got away with speaking
about her recent recording in Hawaii while it was -20 degrees outside!
This track shows off her vocal range and strength whilst she is also comfortable on guitar. Reminiscent of a Lucinda Williams she could undoubtedly win over the same fanbase.
Her voice is haunting, lyrics belie her age and she delivers it all in a convincing fashion. She will go far.
Would have been nice to hear the Leonard Cohen song, but I guess recording in Hawaii takes precedence over freezing your ass off in New England while learning a Cohen tune or TWO. Although don't knock it till you've tried it..

Madi Diaz was performing her debut at Matt Murphy's Pub in the Berklee Singer Songwriter Series. It continues throughout February on each Monday.

Public House Returns

Public House returned with a bang after a short hiatus that saw the B3 Kings keep the tuesday night musical seat nice and warm at Murphy's.
This night has spawned performances from Toussaint, The Slip,
Sam Kinninger and many other stars of track and field.
It came back to life this week with Mike Rivard, Brian Sayers,
Geoff Scott and Timo Shanko playing to a packed out anticipative audience.
They didn't fail to deliver with an opening track of other worldly chill out music that peaked the sense and ended with a tumultous welcome back applause.
Geoff Scott and Mike Rivard combine in an edgy ethereal way that few
guitar combos can quite master.
They sit on a groove that you don't want to stop.

Public House are playing every other Tuesday at Murphy's Pub, Brookline Village throughout Spring.
